Cuando se publicó en 1975, encabezó las listas de Reino Unido y Estados Unidos, logrando el número uno en casi todos los rankings a su semana de salida con casi un millón de copias impresas. Explorando las letras y reflexiones del grupo sobre el mundo, el negocio de la música y las ausencias, el tema clásico Shine On You Crazy Diamond es un tributo a Syd Barrett.
Los miembros de la banda Richard Wright y David Gilmour han declarado que éste es su álbum preferido de Pink Floyd.
